1 Listening 052813

Good morning and praise the Lord for another wonderful day on the path that leads to glory. Give thanks to Him because He is good and His mercy endures forever. When is the last time you had your spiritual hearing checked? If you can’t remember, the time is right now.

Today’s Prayer

Father, I come before you this morning on behalf of my brothers and sisters in Christ first to praise you for being God all by yourself and I give you infinite shouts of hallelujah. Please hear these requests; help each of us on to desire to understand more fully the purpose of the founding of Your church. Even though Your disciples were “born again” in the Upper Room when Jesus breathed the Holy Ghost on them, He told them to wait in Jerusalem for the power of the Holy Spirit to come upon them! Forgive us, for too often we have been satisfied with being “reborn,” that is, receiving a new spirit and prayer line to You, and Your promise of eternal life. Yet You want us to wait and pray to be empowered too! We live in a fractured world as Your first disciples did, for as Christians today we are faced with ridicule and persecution, and our freedoms are endangered. We need all that You have for us — the power and the spiritual gifts for the words to witness, the faith to pray for healing and miracles, and the courage to keep Your Word alive! Oh Lord, help us each to sincerely seek Your Pentecost experience in our lives today. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Let’s eat.

Listening and Doing

New Living Translation
James 1:19-27

My dear brothers and sisters, be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. Your anger can never make things right in God’s sight. So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the message God has planted in your hearts, for it is strong enough to save your souls. And remember, it is a message to obey, not just to listen to. If you don’t obey, you are only fooling yourself. For if you just listen and don’t obey, it is like looking at your face in a mirror but doing nothing to improve your appearance. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you keep looking steadily into God’s perfect law–the law that sets you free–and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are just fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. Pure and lasting religion in the sight of God our Father means that we must care for orphans and widows in their troubles, and refuse to let the world corrupt us.
